How to Choose the Right Car Wash Shampoo

Car shampoo removes dirt, breaks down road grime, rinses clean. It will not damage clear coat, rubber seals, or plastic trim. It has lubrication, so when you drag a mitt across the paint, you are not grinding dust into the surface like sandpaper. If you do not use it, you will scratch the surfaces and tiny scratches will show up in direct sunlight. Your car will look older, even though you just bought it.

Good car wash shampoos create a slick barrier that lifts off the dirt. They also work with wax and ceramic coatings. When you pay for protection, you do not want to wash it off every time you clean the car. After rinsing, paint should feel smooth, not sticky like soap residue. If it feels waxy or greasy, you did not rinse it enough, and now you have got product sitting on the surface, attracting more dirt.

If you wash your car weekly or every two weeks, use maintenance shampoo. It is gentle. It gives lots of lubrication, and it is safe on wax and coatings. Proper Car Washing Technique

To wash your car properly with a car shampoo, rinse the whole thing first with plain water. Do it to remove loose dust, sand, and surface dirt. If you skip this step, you will grind that dirt into the paint with your mitt. Most scratches happen in the first 30 seconds because people did not rinse the vehicle first.

Use a hose or pressure washer on a low setting because high-pressure pushes dirt around instead of washing it off. Prepare two buckets: one with shampoo and water, one with clean water and a small amount of shampoo to help separate dirt so it sinks to the bottom instead of floating back up. Put a mitt in the shampoo bucket, wash one panel (roof, bonnet, one door), then rinse mitt in clean water bucket before getting more shampoo.

Wash top to bottom because generally the roof is the cleanest and lower panels and wheel arches are the dirtiest. Wash the sills first, then use that mitt on the roof, and you are moving heavy grime onto clean paint. Work in sections. Do not soap the entire car then rinse because shampoo dries in warm weather. Wash a panel, rinse it, and move to the next. This way you avoid streaks and water spots.

At the end, rinse the whole car thoroughly and dry it with a microfiber towel. Do not let it air dry because, when water evaporates, it leaves mineral deposits.
