What Are Microfiber Towels?

A microfiber towel is a synthetic fabric made from ultra-fine fibers: polyester and polyamide. Those fibers are split during manufacturing. The process creates microscopic grooves that trap dirt and absorb liquid. One fiber is 1/100th the width of human hair. Millions of these fibers per square inch create a massive surface area. That is why microfiber absorbs from 7 to 8 times its weight in water. The split fibers work like tiny hooks. They grab dirt and pull it into the towel instead of pushing it around the surface.

Types of Microfiber Towels

We have several types of microfiber towels that feature different number of grams per square metre. Drying towels are thick (800-1200 GSM) with plush or waffle-weave pile. One towel dries the entire car. Glass towels are thin (200-400 GSM) and lint-free. They are best for windows. Buffing towels (400-500 GSM) are ultra-soft for removing wax or ceramic coating without marring.

Keep wheel towels separate from paint microfiber towels because brake dust is metallic and abrasive. Colour-code them so you never mix up a wheel towel with a paint towel. Minimum setup recommended: 2 to 3 towels for drying, 2 for glass, 2 to 3 for buffing, 1 to 2 for wheels, and 2 to 3 for interior cleaning.

How to Care for Microfiber Towels?

Your microfiber towels will last more than 50 washes if you take good care of them. Rinse them immediately after use to prevent the dirt from drying into the fibers. You can wash them in the machine at 40-60°C with half the normal amount of detergent with half the normal amount of detergent, or use a dedicated microfiber wash product like Mi-Wash. However, do not use fabric softener because it permanently kills their absorption capacity. Store clean, dry towels in plastic bins with lids. Replace them when they feel harsh or rough.

FAQ – Microfiber Towels

Can I wash microfiber with regular clothes?
We recommend you not to do that. It will destroy the microfiber because cotton lint transfers to the fibers, and makes cleaning more difficult. It is better to wash them separately.

What microfiber towels should I use for drying?
Use the one with 500-800 GSM because it absorbs more water and makes the car dry faster. They are generally easier to use for this purpose.

Can I use the same towel for the interior and the exterior?
Keep separate sets because interior products contaminate paint towels.

My microfiber towels are not absorbing any more. Why?
It must be because of the fabric softener, too much detergent, or product buildup. Try washing them with hot water and vinegar to strip residue. If it does not work, replace them.

How to remove wax from the microfiber towels?
Hot wash them with a degreasing detergent, or dedicate wax-stained towels to wax removal only.

Can I use a microfiber towel on matte paint?
Yes, but use ultra-soft, high GSM towels. Matte shows marring easily, so the plush pile works best.
