What Is Tire Dressing?

Tire dressing contains silicones, polymers, or water-based emulsions that penetrate rubber and create a protective layer. Solvent-based tire dressing has silicone oils dissolved in solvents. It penetrates deep into rubber, and restores black colour from inside out. It also adds a gloss finish that lasts for a couple of weeks.

Water-based tire dressing, on the other hand, uses polymer emulsions. It stays longer on the surface, and adds satin or semi-gloss finish. It does not sling, and as a result, it is easier to control, and safer for paint. However, it lasts for a shorter time.

Gel formulas are thicker and easier to apply. The process of applying it is less messy because it does not drip or run. Spray formulas are faster but more likely to overspray onto paint or wheels.

Solvent-based tire dressing, water-based tire dressing, and gel tire dressing:

• Restores colour
• Adds a gloss or satin finish that makes tires look new
• Blocks UV rays
• Repels dirt and water
• Hides minor scuffs and discolouration

How to Apply Tire Dressing?

Never apply tire dressing on a dirty surface. Wash the tires first with tire cleaner or APC and a brush to remove brake dust, and grime. If you forget to do that, you will seal the dirt in. Apply product to a foam applicator pad, not directly onto tire.

Use less product than you think you should. A few drops are enough. Wipe it onto the sidewall in circular or back-and-forth motions, to cover the surface evenly. Work it into rubber with light pressure. Do not get it on the tread because it might be slippery and dangerous. Let it cure for 5 to 10 minutes before driving so it bonds to rubber and reduces sling risk. After 10 minutes, buff off the excess with a microfiber towel.
